About Pearl Jewelry

There are several different types of pearls with different origins. South Sea Pearls come from several countries including Australia, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand. These pearls are the rarest of the different types of pearls and generally come in a White, Silver, Cream, and Golden color. Tahitian pearls are a little more abundant then South Sea Pearls but still are rare and generally come in darker colors including black, green, dark grays.

Pearl quality is primarily determined by 3 factors. The first factor is the shape. Perfectly round pearls are the most valued while pear and baroque shaped are less valuable. High luster of the pearl also contributes to its value as dull pearls are less valuable. The third factor is the pearls surface. The cleaner the surface is of blemishes and nicks the more valuable it is.
